New Zealand won the toss and decided to field first against England in the opening match of the ICC World Cup 2023, which took place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Harry Brook then joined Joe Root and played a 16-ball cameo of 25, including four boundaries and one six, before Conway caught him in an attempt to clear the ropes once more. Brook’s cameo was part of Joe Root’s 16-ball innings.

Root, who then knitted a solid 70-run stand for the fifth wicket with captain Jos Buttler, until the latter was dismissed by Matt Henry in his second stint with a total of 188 runs scored, brought the score up to 188.

Jos Buttler hit a 42-ball 43 that included two boundaries and two sixes as part of his total.

Joe Root

Joe Root maintained his composure despite losing another partner in Liam Livingstone (20), who Glenn Phillips then bowled while attempting a reverse sweep, bringing England to 229-7.

He achieved the highest score of the match by batting 84 balls and scoring 77 runs with the assistance of four fours and one six.

Bowlers of England with important Runs

Adil Rashid (15) and Mark Wood (13) added important 30 runs in the remaining overs to give New Zealand a target of 283. England was reduced to 252-9 in the 46th over after losing the next two wickets in rapid succession. England, however, they were able to set New Zealand a target of 283.

Michael Santner and Glenn Phillips each took two wickets for New Zealand, but Matt Henry had the most success with his bowling, collecting three for a total of 48.
